About Us
Founded in 1986 - almost a quarter of a century ago! - Marine Risk Management SA started life as a small Cargo Loss Control company. Within 12 months, the company had gained such clients as Amoco, CF Industries, Andre&Cie, all world leaders in their respective fields.
This success was undoubtedly due to the Founder´s intimate knowledge and experience following a seagoing career spanning more than 20 years, from cadet to VLCC Master.
Within 3 years, the company had gained the respect and trust of many more international clients, including Shipowners, Charterers, Traders, Insurers and Lawyers throughout Europe and the United States.
Then, in 1989, the company was asked to perform it´s first ever Asset Recovery task on behalf of a major European bank and it´s lawyers. The vessel was seized by MRM SA in Shanghai, relocated to a more sympathetic and appropriate jurisdiction, placed under arrest and sold at Admiralty Auction shortly afterwards. The client bank recovered it´s entire debt.
Thus began the world´s first and most successful Asset Recovery service (at the time called "MARAP" - Maritime Asset Recovery And Protection). The company went on to act on behalf of most of the world´s major banks, financial institutions and bondholders (together with their legal advisors).
Given that many recovery operations initiated in inhospitable areas of the world, MRM SA gained a reputation (well-deserved, we believe!) for succeeding in some of the most difficult and arduous - and dangerous - situations. It was, therefore, perhaps inevitable that it was eventually asked to review the escalating piracy situation in S E Asia, where crews were starting to be subjected to extreme violence. This resulted in the formation in 1996 of the world´s first Anti-Piracy Rapid Response Force, then focusing on S E Asia. The company´s philosophy from the start has always been to employ only highly professional and experienced maritime professionals, and this was continued by it´s choice of ex-SBS personnel to peform these dangerous missions. That philosophy continues today.
It was during this early period that the company developed ShipTrac - a covert satellite tracking system eventually copied by all and sundry!
In the late 90´s MRM SA predicted the upsurge of low level piracy off Somalia. This was rejected or ignored by the bulk of the maritime community. The warning was repeated in 2002 and received a similarly unenthusiastic reception, as did it´s forecast about West Africa.
It will be appreciated that MRM SA - unlike, for example, the IMB who perform an excellent post-event reporting and data collection service - is a pro-active organisation anticipating challenges, and acting swiftly and decisively on behalf of major clients.
Now, as difficult times appear on the maritime horizon, MRM SA is ready to help our industry rise to and overcome it´s new challenges.
In addition, therefore, to it´s Anti-Piracy service, the company continues to offer Cargo Loss Control and Asset Recovery services, now supplemented by a Vessel Lay-Up service utilising it´s extensive experience gained during recoveries where both hot and cold lay-ups were often necessary.
Whatever your maritime requirements, you can be sure that MRM SA´s unrivalled 23+ years of experience can offer the solution.
